When do babies start to chew?
In a nutshell, babies start to chew as soon as the nightly colics are over. Just kidding, babies start to chew as soon, or slightly before, they have their first pearly-white teeth. And that can be as early as 4 months and as late as 12 months. And they start to chew in an attempt to alleviate the discomfort and pain caused by the fact that the first teeth have to work their way through the tender gums. Chewing causes a kind of counter-pressure that makes this “break through” easier. So how can you make this easier for your baby and safe your sanity at the same time? Your sanity because teething babies are like puppies or rodents, they chew on literally everything they can lay teeth on. And with everything I do mean everything. So, in order to avoid that baby hurts itself, you have to provide some teething helps and teething guards for it.
Chewing toys
Teething babies need to chew, no doubt about that, but you can choose, to a certain extent, on what they chew by offering a selection of different chewing toys. My personal ones are those that you can put in the fridge and they cool down. Give that to your teething little rodent I want to say baby or toddler and you will see that it takes to it like the fish to water. The coolness alleviates the discomfort in the gums even more and will make it the one toy you want to buy in “double pack”, one to put it into your baby’s hands and one to cool it down in the fridge.
Protecting your baby – and your furniture
Think one moment, where does your little treasure spends most of its time? Right, in its crib or cradle! And what will be the one thing it will try its teeth one – right again, the crib rail! So you need to protect that from eager baby teeth and your baby from chewing on things that are nor really healthy for it. My favorite solution for this problem is a to apply a gummi protection to the crib rail. They are easy to apply, easy to clean, serve as a protection as well as a teething guard and are nearly invisible, hence blending in well with the overall decor of your babies room.
Summary: Babies start to teeth the earliest with four months and finish when all their “milk teeth” have come through. You can make its, and your life, easier, by providing it with the appropriate teething aids!
